A quotation from a Gull Lake Advance obituary is included in Deb Hynes' submission; however, a copy of this obituary has not been found by any family members. A letter in June 1987 from John Peters, Editor of the Gull Lake Advance reported that "our files prior to 1950 were destroyed by a water leak".

22 Newspaper item, Item from Gull Lake Advance issue of 5 July 1967 (Centennial). "Pat Maloney was born in Renfrew County, Ontario in 1860. He homesteaded six miles south of Carmichael in 1908 and brought his family out the following year...helped to organize the Grassy Hill School, and served as trustee for many years... councilman in R.M. of Carmichael #109...instrumental in organizing the first telephone line out of Carmichael...played an important part in organizing and establishing the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool ... elected as a director of the Wheat Pool and served until his death in 1924...buried Gull Lake Cemetery.".

23 Theory and Analysis by compiler Eileen Maloney Condon, Family members recall an incident in the first few years of Patrick's residence in Saskatchewan involving charges of shooting a cow...NWMP came to farm and Patrick was charged, released on bail of $1000 collected by the community. Upon inquiry to the Swift Current Provincial Court in an attempt to corroborate this story, I was advised by letter of 5 July 1990 that " the records in our vault go back only to 1927...seeking any file before that is impossible".

31 Theory and Analysis by compiler Eileen Maloney Condon, Len Maloney (J731) has a watch which he says "... belonged to Pat Maloney(J7). He purchased it to work on the railway in the late 1800's. It was passed on to Pat Maloney(J73),his oldest living son. Pat passed it on to his oldest son (Len J731) who will also pass it on to his oldest son." [It is possible that this railroad employment occurred in Minnesota in the early 1890's; the deed for Patrick's Stevens County farms mentions a "contract entitling him thereto" from the St. Paul, Minneapolis & Manitoba Railway Company, which had a line running through Stevens County.].

132 Obituary, My typescript of newspaper item from undated and unknown [Chokio] newspaper. "Daniel Maloney, for the past year proprietor of the Chokio Hotel, died Tuesday, September 4, after a sickness of but a few days. He took a sudden illness Saturday last, caused from stomach trouble. Physicians from Morris and Graceville attended his case but pronounced him beyond recovery on Tuesday morning and his death about six o'clock the same evening threw the peaceful village of Chokio into a state of general sadness for one who was looked upon as one of their leading, trustworthy, honest and enterprising and honest citizens. Deceased was born in Renfrew Co. Canada, thirty eight years ago, had been living in Stevens [sic] County Minn for about ten years before locating at Chokio. He leaves a wife and six small children, two of whom are twin brothers born Saturday, the day he took sick. Mr. Maloney will be greatly missed from Chokio, and his relatives, particularly his bereft wife who is now very sick, have the heartfelt sympathy of a number of friends." [This was typed in 1979 from a clipping that was returned to family members. "Stevens" could be a transcription error by me or an error in the newspaper. Possibly s/b "Stearns". I was advised by the Minnesota Historical Society that they do not have the Chokio newspaper for that time period.].

It is not known if the wife mentioned in his death record was his only wife or if she was the mother of Deborah. It is not known where he lived prior to coming to live with Deborah. It was believed by descendants that Deborah had one or more brothers in Renfrew County - possibly had sisters also.

188 Theory and Analysis by compiler Eileen Maloney Condon, William disappeared (possibly in the Peace River AB area) in the 1920's and was never heard from again. 211 Theory and Analysis by compiler Eileen Maloney Condon, It has not been proven whether the "three brothers" grouped in this family were indeed brothers. Elderly family members differ on how many brothers there were. One thought there had been five brothers, two who settled in Renfrew County, three who went to the USA (one of which returned). Another thought there had been four brothers, one quarantined on Grosse Ile and never heard from again. Another thought one brother settled in Quebec. However, they all agreed that Michael, John and Patrick were brothers from County Clare, and that the other Maloney families in the area were not related. Research has revealed that some of these families were from other Irish counties. No one mentioned the possibility of female siblings, but I have found several possible sisters in the area at that time. While I have not yet proved to my satisfaction that these three were brothers, the evidence seems to indicate a strong likelihood that they were. Marriage records for John and Patrick do not identify parents. The families settled on adjoining homesteads and were much involved with each other as godparents and attendants at church ceremonies, and as witnesses on legal documents. The second generation migrated together to the USA and to other parts of Canada. Instances have been found in church records where someone of this second generation was identified as "cousin". Interpreting this as "first cousin" would establish that their parents were brothers; however, it is possible that the term was used in a broader sense. I have a copy of a letter written in 1967 by 73-year old John Foran, one of Patrick's grandsons. Patrick had lived in upper New York State for several years before homesteading in Ontario; the letter contains many genealogical details (of the time in USA as well as in Canada) which later proved to be reliable, and includes the statement that John and Michael were his grandfather's brothers. He was about ten years old at the time of John's death and remembered him.
